Gamcheon Culture Village and Heuinnyeoul Culture Village are the two hillside villages that appear most often in Busan travel blogs. Both grew from refugee settlements during and after the Korean War, and both are now known for colorful houses, murals and sea views. They feel very different.
Gamcheon Culture Village
Terraced houses climb a steep hill in Saha-gu, with narrow stairways, murals, small galleries, cafes and art installations. The classic photo is the view down the hill over the pastel rooftops.
- Start at the top and walk downhill, since stairs and lanes mostly descend toward the bottom.
- Plan one to two hours. The village is a working neighborhood, so keep voices down and stay out of private yards.
- Subway Line 1 to Toseong Station, then a local bus or taxi.
- The stamp map and scavenger-hunt style activities sold at the entrance are popular with visitors; confirm the current version on site.
- Arrive early or on a weekday; midday and weekends can be very crowded.

Heuinnyeoul Culture Village (Yeongdo)
A quieter cliffside village on the southern tip of Yeongdo where white-washed houses sit above the sea. The draw is the coastal path, seaside cafes and the feel of old Busan. It pairs well with Taejongdae Park and the Oryukdo area.
- Allow an hour for the walk and more if you stop for coffee.
- Go in the late afternoon for sea light, and bring a layer in cold months because the wind is strong.

Which one should you choose?
- Choose Gamcheon for color, murals and a classic photo.
- Choose Heuinnyeoul for the sea, quiet walks and cafes with a view.
- If you have a full day, do Gamcheon in the morning and Heuinnyeoul or Taejongdae in the afternoon.
Tips
- Wear shoes with good grip. Stairs and lanes are steep and can be slippery in rain.
- Cafes at both villages fill up quickly on weekends.
- Check hours and rules on official pages before you go.
