Huinnyeoul Culture Village began as a haven for Korean War refugees in the early 1950s, who built modest brick homes along the steep coastal cliffs of Mount Bongraesan. Named 'Huinnyeoul' (meaning 'white rapids') after the mountain stream water foaming like snow into the sea, it transformed into an artistic creative community in 2011 while retaining its authentic cliffside heritage.
Perched on a 40-meter volcanic cliff, the village features narrow, winding stairways ('Pisong Stairs') connecting multi-tiered pastel blue and white residences. Below the cliff, the Jeolyeong Coastal Walkway runs directly alongside crashing waves, connected by the 70-meter curved Huinnyeoul Coastal Tunnel blasted through solid coastal bedrock.
Spring brings bright yellow Forsythia and pastel murals contrasting against cobalt seas. Summer breezes make the ocean-view cafe terraces idyllic retreats. Autumn offers crystal-clear horizons stretching toward Songdo, while winter brings dramatic ocean sunsets directly in line with the coastal tunnel entrance.
The residential alleyways and coastal walking trails are open 24 hours daily. Artisan craft shops and indie cafes typically operate from 10:30 to 19:30. The illuminated Huinnyeoul Coastal Tunnel is open from 09:00 to 18:00 (extended until 20:00 in summer).
Admission to stroll the village, descending stairways, and passing through the coastal tunnel is 100% free of charge. Most cliffside cafes require at least one beverage order per person (averaging 5,500 to 7,500 KRW) to enjoy panoramic terrace seating.
From Busan Subway Line 1 Nampo Station (Exit 6), walk to the bus stop and board City Bus 7, 71, 82, or 508. Ride for 10-12 minutes and alight at the 'Huinnyeoul Culture Village' or 'Baekryeonsa Temple' bus stop directly at the village's upper entrance.
The upper street (Jeolyeong-ro) is flat and accessible, but the interior village consists entirely of steep, narrow stairways with over 100 steps each, making interior alleys inaccessible for wheelchairs and heavy strollers. Wheelchair users can enjoy panoramic sea views from the upper viewing platforms.
Alight at upper village bus stop โ walk along the central Huinnyeoul-gil alleyway visiting film locations ('The Attorney') โ relax with coffee at a cliffside panoramic terrace cafe โ descend the Piano Stairs to the Jeolyeong Coastal Walkway โ pass through the Coastal Tunnel for iconic portal photos.
Unique local treats include bowl noodles with a view at Huinnyeoul Jeombok ramyeon, sweet toasted croffles (croissant waffles) paired with sea-salt cream lattes, and fresh coastal street snacks like skewers and hotteok near the bus stops.
Cliffside bakeries and cafes provide plant-based oat milk coffees, organic herbal teas, and seasonal fresh fruit tarts. Light vegetable salads and fruit platters are available throughout the artisan cafes.
The world-famous photo spot is the entrance of the Huinnyeoul Coastal Tunnel, where visitors pose inside the dark cave silhouetted against the bright blue sea and sky. Other iconic spots include the blue rooftop railing of 'The Attorney' filming house and the colorful Piano Stairs.
Huinnyeoul is an active residential neighborhood home to elderly citizens. Speak quietly in alleyways, avoid pointing cameras directly into private living rooms, and carry all disposable takeout trash out of the village.
The coastal cliff stairways are steep with uneven steps; comfortable walking shoes with good grip are essential. Handrails line all public staircases. The Yeongdo Police Box and community health post are nearby. Dial 1330 for tourist support.
