Most visitors stay in downtown Gyeongju, but two other areas appear often in local blogs: Yangdong Folk Village, a Joseon-era clan village, and Bomun Lake, the resort district east of the city. They suit a quieter day once you have seen the tombs and Bulguksa.
Yangdong Folk Village
Yangdong is a living village of tiled-roof houses and thatched cottages, listed by UNESCO in 2010 as part of the Historic Villages of Korea (with Hahoe in Andong). It is one of the largest remaining traditional clan villages in the country. People still live here, so it feels very different from a museum.
- Walk the paths up the hillside for views over the rooftops.
- Respect residents: do not enter private houses or fenced yards unless marked as open.
- Wear sturdy shoes. The village is built on slopes with uneven stone paths.
- Allow two to three hours.

Bomun Lake and the Bomun Tourist Complex
East of downtown, Bomun is a lakeside resort area with hotels, restaurants, large cafes and walking paths around the lake. Local blogs mention it often for family trips, spring cherry blossoms and hotel dining. It also has a broader selection of modern facilities than the old town.
- Stroll the lake path, especially in early April for the cherry blossoms.
- Large cafes and hotel restaurants make it a comfortable rest stop.
- Some visitors stay here for a resort-style trip and visit the old town by bus.
How to combine them
- Yangdong is northeast of downtown and Bomun is east, so they sit in different directions. Use taxis or buses, and plan transit time.
- A good day: Yangdong in the morning, lunch in Hwangnidan-gil, Bomun in the afternoon and a lakeside walk at sunset.
Tips
- Hours, fees and rules differ by site and change; check official pages.
- Spring and autumn are best; summers are hot and humid.
