Hwangnidan-gil is a street of renovated hanok houses turned into cafes, restaurants, bakeries and small shops, a short walk from the Daereungwon tombs. It's the most-mentioned neighborhood in Gyeongju travel blogs after Bulguksa, and works well as a relaxed half-day stop between the royal tombs and the evening visit to Donggung and Wolji.
What to do
- Walk the main street and the side lanes behind it. The architecture and signboards are the draw, not any single shop.
- Try the local snacks: Gyeongju bread, barley bread and the ten-won bread.
- Stop for coffee in one of the hanok cafes. Some have rooftop or courtyard seating.
- Rent a hanbok. Shops near the street rent traditional clothes by the hour, and wearing one while walking the tombs and streets is a popular photo activity.

Gyochon Village
A quieter hanok village a short walk across the river area from downtown, associated with the Choi family of Gyeongju. Walk the stone-walled lanes and see the traditional houses. Gyodong beopju, the local traditional rice wine, comes from here.
Best time
- Early morning is calm. Afternoons and weekends are crowded.
- Come in the evening for lanterns and warm lighting, then walk to Donggung and Wolji.
