Gyeongju is often described as an open-air museum of the Silla kingdom, but it also works well for families with children who have limited patience for tombs and temples. Three family-friendly areas sit east of downtown: Gyeongju Expo Park with Gyeongju Tower, the Gyeongju World theme park, and the Bomun Lake area. Because they are close to one another and away from the central historic sites, they can be grouped into one or two easy days. This guide covers how to organize them, how to get around and what to confirm before leaving the hotel.
How the Three Areas Fit Together
All three attractions lie east of downtown, so a family can base itself in the city centre and travel out, or stay near Bomun Lake and have the others close by. A sensible split is:
- One day for Gyeongju World, since a theme park can fill most of a day with children.
- One lighter day for Expo Park, Gyeongju Tower and a walk around Bomun Lake.
Families with very young children may prefer to do only one major stop per day and leave the rest as optional.

Gyeongju Expo Park and Gyeongju Tower
Expo Park is a large landscaped area built for exhibitions, with open space where children can run around, which helps after time in a car or bus. Gyeongju Tower is the landmark here and is easy to spot, so it also works as a meeting point if the group splits up.
- Check the official site or Naver Map for which exhibition halls, observation areas and outdoor spaces are open on your date.
- Opening days can differ by facility and season, so do not assume everything operates daily.
- Allow time for walking. The park is spread out, and small children tire quickly.
Gyeongju World
Gyeongju World is the theme park of the three and the most obvious choice for older children and teenagers. Like most parks of this type, it combines rides, shows and seasonal events.
- Confirm opening days before travelling, because parks often close on certain weekdays or in the off-season.
- Rides usually have height or age restrictions. Check these for each child on the official site before promising anything.
- Bring weather-appropriate clothing. Queues and outdoor walking mean sun, rain or cold are felt fully.
- Agree on a meeting spot in advance in case a child gets separated from the group.

Bomun Lake
Bomun Lake is a good counterweight to the theme park. A lakeside walk is gentle, has plenty of space, and suits strollers and tired legs better than a ride queue. It also works as a calmer end to a busy day.
- Treat it as a flexible stop. A short walk and a rest is enough, and a longer loop is optional.
- The surrounding resort area has many places to eat and rest. Choose by looking at current reviews and photos on Naver Map or Kakao Map.
- Check weather and daylight before going, as open lakeside paths feel very different in summer heat and winter wind.
Getting Around
The brief points to taxis and buses as the practical options, and for families these are usually easier than driving in an unfamiliar country.
- Taxis are convenient for groups with strollers, bags or tired children, especially for the trip between attractions that are not next to each other.
- Buses work well and cost less, but routes and frequency change, so check the live route in Naver Map or Kakao Map on the day.
- Foreign visitors often find Korean map apps more accurate for bus numbers and stops than international ones. Set the app to English if needed.
- Save the Korean name of your next destination in the app, or show it on your phone to a taxi driver.
Food and Allergy Cautions
Meals are likely to happen at or near the attractions, so plan ahead for dietary needs.
- Many Korean dishes contain soy, sesame, peanuts, shellfish, eggs or wheat, sometimes in sauces and broths that are not obvious from the dish name.
- Seafood and fish-based stock appear in many soups and side dishes, including some that look vegetarian.
- If a child has an allergy, carry a written card in Korean listing the allergen, and ask staff to confirm ingredients rather than relying on the menu name.
- Pack safe snacks and drinks for park days, as options inside attractions may be limited.
Tips
- Check opening days for all three places before fixing your itinerary. This is the most common cause of a wasted trip.
- Do not attempt all three in one day with young children. Pair the theme park with a rest day, or pair Expo Park with Bomun Lake.
- Look up exact hours, ticket details and any height rules on each official site rather than relying on older articles.
- Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for routes, current reviews and temporary closures.
- Carry water, sun protection or rain gear, and a change of clothes for younger children.
- Build in breaks. A slower plan that ends with a calm lake walk usually goes better than a packed schedule.
