Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak (UNESCO)

Seongsan Ilchulbong, known as 'Sunrise Peak', is an archetypal hydrovolcanic tuff cone rising 182 meters from Jeju's eastern sea. Formed 5,000 years ago by explosive underwater eruptions, it was designated a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site in 2007.

Highlights: 600-meter-wide summit crater bowl surrounded by 99 sharp basalt spires, expansive open ocean horizon sunrises, and traditional Jeju Haenyeo female diver demonstrations in the northern cove.

Dawn year-round rewards hikers with sunrises over the Pacific horizon. Spring (March-April) blankets adjacent coastal plains at Seopjikoji with vibrant yellow canola flower blooms.

Summer hours (March-September) run 07:00 - 20:00 (ticketing closes 19:00). Winter hours (October-February) run 07:30 - 19:00 (closes 17:50). Closed on the first Monday of each month.

Summit Crater Trail admission: Adults 5,000 KRW, Children/Youth 2,500 KRW, Seniors 65+ free. The left-hand coastal trail leading to the Haenyeo cove and viewing promontory is completely free.

From Jeju International Airport, take Express Bus 111 or 112 directly to Seongsan Transit Loop (approx. 1 hour 15 minutes). Walk 5 minutes straight to the ticket gate.

The summit trail consists of 500+ steep wooden steps not suitable for wheelchairs. However, the coastal viewing path on the left features gentle paved ramps accessible for strollers.

Crater Hike (90m): Ticket gate -> Upward staircase (25 mins) -> Summit viewing deck -> Crater panorama -> North face descent stairs -> Haenyeo performance cove.

Feast on fresh seafood ramen crammed with live abalone, octopus, and sea cucumbers in the cove; juicy Jeju black pork barbecue in Seongsan village; and refreshing Hallabong citrus soft-serve.

Seaside eateries prepare pristine grilled sea bream, cutlassfish stews, and pure abalone rice porridge (Jeonbokjuk) made to order without meat broth upon dietary request.

Iconic shots: dawn sunrise cresting the crater deck, and the telephoto perspective from Gwangchigi Beach at low tide with green moss-covered volcanic rocks framing the peak.

Hikers must remain on wooden staircases to prevent turf erosion. Crossing safety ropes near crater cliffs is forbidden. Flying recreational drones is strictly prohibited across the park.

Automated defibrillators (AED) are located at the ticket office and summit shelter. Wear sturdy sneakers for the steep steps. Dial 119 for regional mountain and coastal rescue.

Neighboring sights: Udo Island (ferries depart Seongsan Port 1.5km north), dramatic Seopjikoji coastal promontory (3km south), and Gwangchigi Beach (1.2km west).

Traditional Haenyeo diving demonstrations take place daily at 13:30 and 15:00 at the rocky beach below the north cliff (subject to sea weather and wave conditions).

Hike Seongsan Ilchulbong at sunrise, catch the 10:00 ferry from Seongsan Port to cycle coastal Udo, and conclude with golden hour photography and dining at Seopjikoji.
