Curator's Guide & Overview

Comprehensive Guide

1. UNESCO Heritage: Architecture in Harmony with Nature

Unlike traditional Chinese and Korean palace complexes governed by strict axial symmetry, Changdeokgung was constructed to conform precisely to the contours of Mount Baegaksan. After the destruction of Gyeongbokgung during the Imjin War, Changdeokgung served as the principal royal residence and seat of sovereign power for approximately 270 years, preserving an authentic window into Joseon court protocol.

2. The Royal Secret Garden (Huwon)

Occupying over sixty percent of the palace grounds, the Secret Garden is a masterwork of East Asian horticultural philosophy. Highlights include Buyongji, a square lotus pond representing Earth with a circular island symbolizing Heaven, Juhamnu Royal Library Pavilion, and the Bullomun (Gate of Eternal Youth) carved from a single monolithic granite block.

3. Visitor Protocols & Ticketing

While the primary palace compound is accessible via regular admission, access to the Secret Garden requires a dedicated guided tour ticket, available through advance online booking on the official Cultural Heritage Administration website or limited same-day morning on-site quotas. Accessed via Anguk Station (Line 3, Exit 3).

Visiting Changdeokgung Palace & Secret Garden was one of the true highlights of my journey in Seoul. Easy access via public transit, remarkably well-maintained grounds, and authentic local food nearby.
