Jeonju Hanok Village comprises over 700 traditional Korean Hanok residences in downtown Jeonju. Recognized as the ancestral seat of the Jeonju Yi royal clan that ruled the Joseon Dynasty for five centuries, it preserves an extraordinary urban architectural heritage.
Signatures: Gyeonggijeon Shrine (housing the only surviving authentic royal portrait of King Taejo), Jeondong Catholic Cathedral (striking 1914 Romanesque red-brick cathedral), and Omokdae pavilion on the ridge.
Autumn (October-November) carpets historic courtyards in golden ginkgo leaves, particularly beneath the 400-year-old tree inside Gyeonggijeon Shrine. Spring brings blooming magnolias to private courtyards.
Village stone alleys remain open 24/7. Gyeonggijeon Shrine operates 09:00 - 19:00 (March-October) and 09:00 - 18:00 (November-February). Royal Portrait Museum is closed on Mondays.
Village walking is free. Gyeonggijeon Shrine charges a modest 3,000 KRW for adults (free for seniors 65+ and children under 6). Traditional craft and Hanji papermaking workshops start at 5,000 KRW.
From KTX Jeonju Station, take City Bus 119, 535, or 543 directly to Hanok Village bus stop (approx. 20-25 minutes). Taxis take about 15 minutes and cost around 7,000 - 8,000 KRW.
Taejo-ro and surrounding lanes are flat cobblestoned pedestrian areas with step-free sidewalks. Free stroller and wheelchair rentals are available at the Hanok Village Tourist Information Center.
Heritage Stroll (120m): Jeondong Cathedral -> Gyeonggijeon Shrine -> Royal Portrait Museum -> Jeonju Hyanggyo Confucius School -> Climb wooden stairs up Omokdae for sunset over rooftops.
Jeonju Bibimbap served in hot heavy brass bowls (topped with seasonal herbs, beef tartare, and fermented gochujang), boiling Bean Sprout Soup (Kongnamul Gukbap), and handmade Choco Pies.
Traditional Jeonju restaurants readily prepare 100% plant-based bibimbap upon request without egg or beef, substituting rich sesame oil and mountain greens. Soybean tofu stews abound.
The wooden boardwalk observation deck below Omokdae pavilion captures the definitive panorama of Jeonju Hanok Village, where cascading grey tile rooflines stretch toward the western sunset.
Vehicle traffic is barred on weekends and holidays along main alleys, creating a pedestrian haven. Visitors should respect residential boundaries and avoid loud noise in private side alleys.
A dedicated tourist police post operates at the Hanok Village entrance. Chonbuk National University Hospital regional emergency trauma center is 3.5km north. Dial 1330 for translation.
Nearby sites: colorful Jaman Mural Village (across the pedestrian overpass), historic Nambu Traditional Market (500m west, famous for Friday/Saturday night markets), and Jeonju Hyanggyo.
Over 50 rental boutiques line Taejo-ro offering colorful Hanbok and modern retro vintage fashion from 15,000 KRW for 2 hours. Lockers and hair-styling are widely provided.
Tour Gyeonggijeon and Jeondong Cathedral in the morning, rent Hanbok for alley photography, climb Omokdae for sunset, and conclude with street food tasting at Nambu Night Market.
