Originally celebrated in classical Joseon geography as a miniature reflection of Mount Geumgang (hence named 'Sogeumsan' or 'Little Geumgang'), the Ganhyeon Valley was transformed in January 2018 with the opening of South Korea's longest pedestrian suspension bridge at the time. Evolving through ambitious municipal engineering into the full-scale 'Sogeumsan Grand Valley' in 2022, this cliffside eco-adventure circuit integrates pedestrian suspension bridges, sheer rock-wall boardwalks, and a massive glass skybridge suspended high above the converging emerald waters of the Seomgang and Samsancheon rivers.
The thrilling circular sky-trekking course links four engineering wonders: the original Sogeumsan Suspension Bridge (Chulreong-dari), spanning 200 meters across a 100-meter-deep chasm; the Sogeum Jando, a 360-meter-long cantilevered steel grating boardwalk anchored into sheer vertical granite cliffs 200 meters above the canyon floor; the 404-meter-long Sogeumsan Ulreong-dari (Wobbly Glass Bridge), featuring transparent glass viewing floors twice as long as the first bridge; and the 100-meter-long Grand Escalator transporting visitors effortlessly back to the valley floor.
Spring paints the dramatic granite spires in delicate pink wild azaleas and blooming cherry blossoms lining the riverbanks. Summer brings thrilling outdoor aquatic leisure along the Seomgang River and evening multimedia fountain water-screen shows dancing against the vertical stone cliff amphitheater. Autumn is the premier trekking season, cloaking the jagged cliffs in fiery orange and scarlet maple foliage reflected in jade waters below. Winter wraps the canyon and suspension cables in crystalline frost and icy stillness, evoking an ancient Asian mountain landscape painting.
Operating hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 09:00 to 18:00 during summer (May to October) and 09:00 to 17:00 in winter (November to April). Ticket sales close two hours prior to park closure. The complex is closed on the first and third Monday of every month. The ideal visiting timeframe is arriving around 10:00 or 13:30, giving you a leisurely 2.5 to 3 hours to complete the full cliffside circuit before afternoon winds intensify across the canyon.
The all-inclusive Grand Valley Pass costs 9,000 KRW for adults (13+) and 5,000 KRW for children (7-12 years). This unified ticket grants complete access to the 578-step Deck Staircase, the 200m Suspension Bridge, the Sky Tower, the Sogeum Cliff Walkway, the 404m Glass Bridge, and the descending Escalator. International credit cards are accepted at all automated kiosks.
The canyon entry boulevard from the parking plazas to the base station is wide, flat, and fully barrier-free along the river promenade. Ascending to the first suspension bridge involves climbing the 'Health-Giving 578-Step Wooden Deck Staircase', which features wide rest platforms and railings. Once at bridge level, the Sogeum Jando and Ulreong-dari glass bridge are level with continuous steel safety balustrades. Wheelchair users can enjoy the lower riverside promenade and view the magnificent bridges from below. Accessible restrooms are positioned at both base and summit terminals.
Recommended 2.5-Hour Sky Adventure Circuit: Walk through Ganhyeon Tourist Village across the bridge โ ascend the 578-step wooden staircase to the upper deck โ experience the spine-tingling thrill of crossing the 200-meter Sogeumsan Suspension Bridge 100 meters above the gorge โ traverse the Sogeum Jando cliff-hugging catwalk along sheer vertical stone walls โ climb the multi-tiered Sky Tower for 360-degree canyon vistas โ cross the 404-meter Ulreong-dari Glass Bridge looking through clear floor panels โ descend comfortably via the Grand Escalator โ enjoy riverside dining.
The Ganhyeon Tourist Village features mouthwatering Gangwon mountain flavors: feast on savory Wonju Chueotang (spicy ground mudfish stew simmered with wild perilla and dropwort in cast-iron cauldrons), sizzling charcoal Hanwoo beef barbecue, crispy buckwheat potato pancakes, and spicy buckwheat makguksu noodles.
Vegetarian diners can enjoy customized traditional options in the tourist village restaurants: fragrant wild mountain root bibimbap (deodeok bibimbap), pan-fried golden potato pancakes (gamjajeon), rustic acorn jelly salads, and handmade tofu stews. Cafes along the riverbank serve iced citron infusions, sweet pumpkin pies, and specialty coffees.
Unforgettable photo opportunities: standing mid-span on the bright red 200-meter Sogeumsan Suspension Bridge looking down onto the winding Seomgang River far below, walking the sheer-cliff cantilevered catwalk of Sogeum Jando with rock walls rising above and empty air beneath your feet, posing on the transparent glass panels of the 404-meter Ulreong-dari bridge, and capturing the twin suspension bridges spanning the canyon from the Sky Tower balcony.
Due to high-altitude canyon winds, hold tightly to hats, sunglasses, and mobile phones. Running, shaking the suspension bridges, or climbing on safety cables is strictly forbidden. The bridges may temporarily pause operations during severe typhoons, heavy snowstorms, or gale-force winds above 20 m/s for visitor safety. Smoking is prohibited throughout the mountain park. Pets are not permitted on the elevated bridges.
A mountain safety command post monitors the skyway network via CCTV with medical rangers and safety marshals stationed across both bridges. Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and emergency panic buttons are installed at every tower. For weather forecasts or operational status, contact the Ganhyeon Tourist Management Office at 033-749-4860 or dial the 1330 Korea Travel Hotline.
Sogeumsan Grand Valley is located just 20 minutes from Wonju city center and the Museum SAN (Tadao Ando's world-famous architectural museum), making it easy to combine thrilling outdoor adventure with world-class contemporary art and architecture.
Q: How scary are the suspension bridges for people afraid of heights? A: While the bridges are engineered to the highest seismic and typhoon safety standards (supporting thousands of pedestrians simultaneously), crossing 100 meters above the canyon offers an intense, thrilling adrenaline rush; looking straight ahead at the mountain horizon helps those with mild vertigo enjoy the panoramic beauty without fear.
