Comprehensive Guide1. A Rare Sanctuary Built upon Coastal Rocks
While the majority of Korean temples nestle deep within forested mountain ranges, Haedong Yonggungsa commands a breathtaking oceanside promontory. Established in 1376 during the Goryeo Dynasty by royal preceptor Naong Dasa, the sanctuary honors Haesu Gwaneum (the Sea Goddess of Compassion), who is believed to reside in coastal caverns and protect voyagers.
2. 108 Steps to Enlightenment & Massive Sea Goddess Statue
Visitors approach the sanctuary via the 108 Stairs of Longevity, designed to shed worldly desires with each descending step. Crossing the arched Stone Bridge of the Dragon Gate reveals the main Daeungjeon Hall and the 10-meter-tall Haesu Gwaneum Daebul statue, majestically poised on an offshore crag amidst thunderous oceanic spray.
3. Sunrise Splendor & Transit Connections
As one of the easternmost coastal sanctuaries on the peninsula, it is a premier gathering site for welcoming the first rays of the morning sunrise. Easily accessible by taking the Donghae Commuter Rail line to Osiria Station, followed by a short 10-minute connecting ride on local bus routes 181 or 1001.
