High-speed rail is the most practical way to cover the length of South Korea. From Seoul Station, the KTX reaches Busan in about 2.5 hours, and a separate KTX service runs to Singyeongju, the station that serves Gyeongju. Many visitors combine both cities in one trip, using Gyeongju for temples and ancient royal tombs and Busan for coast and city life. This guide covers the routes, booking, station choices and how to handle luggage.
Choosing Your Route
There are two common itineraries, and the best one depends on how much time is available.
- Seoul to Busan directly: The KTX from Seoul Station takes about 2.5 hours. This suits travelers who want to reach the coast quickly.
- Seoul to Gyeongju: Take the KTX to Singyeongju station. The station is not in central Gyeongju, so plan a bus or taxi onward to the historic area.
- Seoul, Gyeongju, then Busan: Many travelers stop in Gyeongju first, then continue south to Busan. This avoids backtracking and makes good use of the rail network.
Check current timetables and journey times on the Korail site, since services and stopping patterns change.

Seoul Station and Suseo Station
Two departure points serve the high-speed network from Seoul, and they run different operators.
- Seoul Station: The main terminal for KTX services run by Korail. It connects to subway lines and is the easiest choice if staying in central Seoul.
- Suseo Station: The departure point for SRT, a separate high-speed service in the southeast of the city. It can be more convenient if the hotel is in the southern part of Seoul.
Choose the station closest to the accommodation, then compare timetables. A shorter train ride does not help if the trip across Seoul to the station takes much longer. Confirm the destination stations served by each operator before booking, because KTX and SRT tickets are not interchangeable.
Reserving Seats
Reserve seats ahead on Korail, especially for weekends, public holidays and peak travel seasons, when popular trains can sell out. Booking early gives the widest choice of departure times.
- Use the official Korail website or app, and check the English-language options.
- Have a passport and a payment card that works internationally ready.
- Check the official site for current fares, ticket types and any rail passes available to foreign visitors.
- Save the confirmation and collect or display the ticket as the booking instructions describe.
- Arrive at the station with time to spare, as large terminals can take a while to navigate.
If a train is full, ask at the station about alternative departures or the other operator. Standing or unreserved options may exist on some services, but these are less comfortable on a long ride.

Getting from Singyeongju to Gyeongju
Singyeongju station sits outside the main sights, so the final leg is a separate step. Local buses and taxis typically connect the station with the central Gyeongju area. Look up the current route on Naver Map or Kakao Map before arriving, and note which stop to use for the hotel or attraction. If arriving with large bags, a taxi may be simpler than a crowded bus.
Gyeongju is spread out, with sights separated by short distances. Allow time to move between them, and consider renting a bicycle or using taxis for efficiency.
Lockers and Luggage
Carrying suitcases across multiple cities is tiring, so plan around storage and transfers.
- Station lockers: Major stations such as Seoul Station and Busan have luggage lockers. Availability varies with size and time of day, so do not count on a free locker at peak periods. Check pricing and sizes at the machine.
- Pack light: A small overnight bag is much easier to manage than a large suitcase when covering Gyeongju on foot or by bus.
- Store bulky items in Seoul: If returning to Seoul at the end of the trip, ask the hotel whether they can hold large bags while traveling south.
- Keep valuables with you: Carry passports, electronics and medication in a day bag rather than a locker.
- On the train: Luggage racks and space near the seat or carriage ends are limited. Keep bags compact and place them where they do not block the aisle.
Getting Around Busan
Busan is a large coastal city with a subway system and extensive bus routes. After arriving at Busan Station, use Naver Map or Kakao Map to plan the route to the hotel. Foreign visitors often find these apps more reliable for Korean public transport than some international map services. If the hotel is far from the station, a taxi can save effort with heavy luggage.
Tips
- Book Korail seats as early as possible, and confirm whether the departure is from Seoul Station or Suseo.
- Verify that the ticket matches the correct operator, KTX or SRT.
- Allow extra time for the transfer between Singyeongju station and central Gyeongju.
- Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for bus, subway and taxi directions.
- Check official sites for current fares, timetables and station facilities before travel.
- Keep luggage small and carry valuables in a day bag.
- Have the booking confirmation and passport accessible when boarding.
