National Museum of Korea

Curator's Guide & Overview
Comprehensive Guide1. Architectural Grandeur & Expansive Collections
Inaugurated at its expansive Yongsan campus in 2005, the National Museum of Korea ranks among the largest museums in the world by floor area. Designed with an open central plaza that frames Mount Namsan and the Seoul skyline, the museum showcases thousands of years of Korean peninsula civilizations across comprehensive permanent galleries that are completely free of charge.
2. The Room of Quiet Contemplation & Towering Treasures
The museum's crown jewel is the 'Room of Quiet Contemplation', a dedicated meditative space designed by architect Choi Wook, showcasing two 6th- and 7th-century gilt-bronze Pensive Bodhisattvas (National Treasures No. 78 and 83). Another marvel is the Gyeongcheonsa Ten-Story Stone Pagoda, an intricately carved 14th-century marble masterpiece illuminating the central Grand Path.
3. Practical Tips & Transportation
Permanent exhibitions are completely free to enter, while major international temporary exhibitions require tickets. After exploring the galleries, visitors can relax around the Mirror Pond (Geoulmot) and scenic pavilion gardens. Directly accessed via Ichon Station (Line 4 and Gyeongui-Jungang Line, Exit 2) through a covered underground concourse.
