Officially opened to the public in March 2022, the Geumgang Pedestrian Bridge (affectionately nicknamed 'Ieung Bridge' after the circular Korean vowel letter 'ㅇ') is an engineering marvel. It is South Korea's first circular pedestrian-exclusive river crossing. Designed with a total outer circumference of exactly 1,446 meters, the dimensions deliberately honor King Sejong the Great's proclamation of the Hunminjeongeum (Hangul alphabet) in the year 1446.
The structure utilizes an innovative double-deck design with an outer circular diameter of 460 meters. The upper deck (at 12 meters above water) is reserved strictly for pedestrians, complete with interactive light swings, a glass skywalk overlook, an outdoor exercise area, and kinetic art sculptures. The lower deck provides a segregated, bi-directional 7-meter-wide path exclusively for bicycles and personal micro-mobility devices.
Spring evenings bring pleasant river breezes and cherry blossom illumination along both northern and southern embankment approaches. Summer nights draw thousands of citizens to witness mist-cooling fountains and illuminated water curtains. Autumn surrounds the riverbanks with golden reed beds and crimson maple ribbons, while winter showcases crisp starry skies and synchronized LED holiday light displays.
The bridge is accessible daily from 06:00 in the morning until 23:00 at night. Gates close overnight for municipal safety inspections and cleaning. The dynamic LED architectural lighting activates automatically at dusk every evening, bathing the circular arches in shifting hues of sapphire, jade, and gold until closing. The best time to visit is around 19:30 to experience twilight dusk turning into a full light spectacle.
Admission to Ieung Bridge is completely free of charge. Free parking is available at the South Plaza parking facility adjacent to Sejong City Hall and at the North Plaza lot near Sejong Central Park.
The pedestrian bridge was built to rigorous barrier-free standards. Four high-speed glass observation elevators located at the north and south entry towers provide seamless step-free access between ground level and the upper pedestrian deck. The entire 1.4-kilometer circular walking track is completely level with non-slip polyurethane cushioning and braille tactile guidance paths.
Recommended 1-Hour Circular Walk: Ascend via the South Plaza elevator → stroll clockwise along the upper deck → pause at the Hangul-inspired sculptural installations → step onto the glass-bottomed cantilevered skywalk high above the flowing Geumgang waters → swing on the illuminated LED hoop swings → take in the 360-degree panoramic view of Sejong City Hall and Mount Jeonwol → descend at North Plaza or complete the full circle.
Along the Boram-dong waterfront avenue south of the bridge, diners will find high-end riverside eateries: charcoal-grilled Sejong pork belly, fresh spicy freshwater fish spicy stew (maeuntang), handmade tofu hot pots, and artisanal craft breweries featuring panoramic balcony views of the illuminated circular bridge.
Vegetarian-friendly dining options in Boram-dong include stone-pot mountain vegetable bibimbap, pure silken tofu stews made without seafood broth, and handmade perilla dumpling soups. Waterfront cafes offer organic herbal infusions and vegan fruit desserts.
Premier photo spots: standing on the glass skywalk observation deck looking straight down onto the flowing Geumgang River, framing the circular curvature of the bridge with Sejong's glittering skyline from the central viewing platform, and sitting inside the giant illuminated LED ring swings at dusk.
Pedestrians and bicycles are strictly segregated: bicycles, electric scooters, and rollerblades are absolutely prohibited on the upper walking deck and must use the lower deck. Smoking, alcohol consumption, fishing from bridge railings, and drone flying without prior military-corridor clearance are strictly prohibited. Pets on leashes are permitted on the upper walking deck.
CCTV emergency call buttons and automated AED defibrillators are situated at 200-meter intervals around the circular span. On-site municipal security personnel monitor the bridge continuously from the South Plaza control center. For assistance or emergencies, call bridge security at 044-868-9128 or dial 1330 for tourist interpretation.
The northern bridge landing leads directly into Sejong Central Park and the Sejong National Arboretum, while the southern landing borders the waterfront promenade of Sejong City Hall and the culinary district of Boram-dong.
Q: Can you ride rental bikes across the bridge? A: Yes, but only on the designated lower deck. The upper deck is reserved exclusively for pedestrians, strollers, and wheelchairs to ensure complete pedestrian safety.
Sejong City Futuristic Sunset & Night View Tour: Late afternoon tour of the National Arboretum → riverside dinner at Boram-dong waterfront → 1-hour twilight walking loop across Ieung Bridge → enjoying illuminated fountains and media art on the Geumgang River.
