Inaugurated in October 2020 as South Korea's first urban-type national arboretum, Sejong National Arboretum encompasses 65 hectares in the central green belt of Sejong Special Self-Governing City. Designed to harmonize urban infrastructure with ecological conservation, the arboretum serves as a critical national gene bank housing over 2,800 plant species, 1.7 million botanical specimens, and vital educational facilities.
The architectural crown jewel is the Four Seasons Display Greenhouse, shaped like the three unfurling petals of a Siberian iris (the municipal flower). Rising 32 meters, it houses distinct Tropical, Mediterranean, and Special Themed Biomes. Outside, sprawling historic landscapes include the Korean Traditional Garden, which faithfully mirrors the Secret Garden (Huwon) of Changdeokgung Palace, complete with Buyongjeong and Juhamnu pavilions.
Spring illuminates the outdoor gardens with sea-like fields of tulips and blossoming flowering dogwoods. Summer unveils vibrant tropical water lilies and towering Amazonian giant victorias inside climate-controlled pavilions. Autumn carpets the traditional palace courts with golden ginkgoes and royal chrysanthemums, while winter makes the lush, mist-drizzled tropical greenhouse a warm subtropical sanctuary.
Operating hours in summer (March through October) are Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 18:00 (last entry at 17:00). In winter (November through February), hours adjust to 09:00 to 17:00 (last entry at 16:00). The arboretum is closed on Mondays and New Year's Day. Visiting during mid-morning (10:00-12:30) allows you to tour the outdoor courtyards before enjoying the climate-controlled indoor biomes.
General admission tickets are 5,000 KRW for adults (19-64), 4,000 KRW for teenagers, and 3,000 KRW for elementary students. Children under 6, seniors over 65, and persons with disabilities enter free. Special night openings during summer weekends may require advance timed reservations on the official Korea Forest Service website. Automated English-language kiosks are available at the Visitor Center.
From Osong High-Speed Rail Station (KTX/SRT), board the Sejong BRT (Route B1 or B2) to the Government Complex Sejong South stop, then transfer to local Bus 221 directly to the Sejong National Arboretum Gate. If traveling from downtown Daejeon, the BRT Route B2 provides a seamless 40-minute connection. Abundant on-site parking is provided free of charge.
Engineered to the highest Universal Barrier-Free Design criteria, all main pedestrian arterial paths are paved, flat, and equipped with tactile safety tiles. Hydraulic passenger elevators grant full wheelchair access to the upper canopy walkways of the Four Seasons Greenhouse. Complimentary manual wheelchairs and electric mobility scooters are available at the Visitor Information Center.
Curated 2.5-Hour Highlights Itinerary: Visitor Center reception → explore the Mediterranean House (baobab trees and Spanish olive orchards) → cross into the humid Tropical Rainforest biome with its 8-meter cascading indoor waterfall → ascend to the 32-meter Sky Canopy Walk → stroll outdoors to the Korean Traditional Palace Garden and Buyongjeong pond → examine ancient dwarf trees at the Bonsai Garden → visit the Children's Garden.
Within the Visitor Center, the Food Square and Botanical Cafe offer seasonal dining: try royal lotus leaf wrapped rice (yeonnip-bap), hearty soybean paste stews made with Sejong regional agricultural produce, and refreshing hibiscus-citrus iced teas. Across the lake in the Dodam-dong commercial zone, authentic Sejong charcoal pork galbi and buckwheat noodles abound.
Vegetarian diners will appreciate the temple-food style lotus leaf rice set served in the main pavilion restaurant, featuring stewed lotus roots, pickled wild mountain herbs, and tofu salad. The on-site cafeteria also serves plant-based vegetable bibimbap upon request.
Top photography angles: standing beneath the towering tropical foliage on the suspension skybridge inside the Rainforest Greenhouse, framing Buyongjeong pavilion across the mirror-like lotus pond in the Traditional Garden, and capturing the sleek glass curves of the Iris Greenhouse against sunset skies from the Great Lawn Plaza.
Visitors must remain on marked stone paths and boardwalks; stepping into floral beds or touching botanical research plantings is strictly prohibited. Smoking, alcoholic beverages, and personal sports equipment (skateboards, kick-scooters, and balls) are forbidden within the gates. Picnic food may only be consumed at designated outdoor shaded benches.
The Visitor Information Center operates a fully equipped nursing room, lost-child alert desk, and automated defibrillators. Security patrols monitor the grounds via CCTV. For immediate botanical interpretation or emergency assistance, contact the arboretum operations office at 044-961-0000 or the 1330 Korea Travel Interpreting Service.
