Constructed in 1925 during the Japanese colonial period as an agricultural reservoir to irrigate the fertile Sincheon plains, Suseong Lake was pioneered by local landowner Mizusaki Rinjiro alongside Korean farmers. As Daegu expanded into a modern metropolis in the late 20th century, the reservoir was transformed into an urban eco-park and cultural waterfront cherished by residents and travelers alike.
The lake features a 2,040-meter perimeter walking promenade shaded by weeping willows and ginkgo trees. Its crowning installation is the Suseong Lake Musical Fountain, measuring 90 meters in length and shooting jets of water 70 meters high, synchronized with colorful LED lighting and laser video projections. The southern bank rises into scenic hills lined with glass-walled modern cafes.
Spring brings picturesque weeping willows turning lime-green and blooming pink cherry blossom trees reflecting off the water. Summer nights offer refreshing breezes and dazzling fountain spectacles. Autumn frames the lake in fiery red Japanese maples and golden foliage, while winter brings romantic stillness and migratory waterfowl swimming in the calm water.
The lakeside walking trail and parks are open 24 hours daily with free access. The spectacular Suseong Lake Musical Fountain performs four times daily from May through October (daytime: 13:00, 16:00; nighttime with illumination: 20:00, 21:00, closed Mondays for maintenance). Late afternoon to twilight is the most rewarding visiting window.
Admission to Suseong Lake, the wooden viewing piers, and the musical fountain performances is completely free of charge. Pedal-powered and motor-assisted duck boats cost between 15,000 KRW and 18,000 KRW for a 30-minute rental accommodating up to four passengers.
Ride Daegu Metro Line 3 (the sky-monorail) to Suseongmot Station and exit via Exit 1. Walk south along the landscaped canal promenade for 5 minutes to arrive at the northern entrance of the lake.
The entire 2-kilometer circuit is fully accessible, featuring barrier-free wooden boardwalks, level paving, and gently sloping ramps. Wheelchair-accessible public restrooms and braille tactile maps are located at the tourist information center on the eastern bank.
Arrive at Metro Line 3 Suseongmot Station โ stroll along the willow-lined northern boardwalk โ rent a duck boat from the central pier โ visit the poet Lee Sang-hwa commemorative monument โ sip coffee on a 4th-floor terrace overlooking the water โ watch the 20:00 evening musical laser fountain show.
The Suseong Lake Food Street is celebrated for premium Daegu specialties: charcoal-grilled beef and pork intestines (makchang), spicy stir-fried octopus (nakji-bokkeum), and fresh sashimi at lakeside garden restaurants. Deuraedeul (Food Boulevard) features dozens of upscale eateries.
Lakeside European bistros serve stone-fired vegetarian pizzas, fresh pasta, and hearty salad bowls. Specialty coffee roasteries (such as A Twosome Place, Coffee Smith, and local roaster Handip) offer vegan oat milk substitutions and plant-based desserts with scenic lake views.
Iconic photo spots include the curved wooden deck reflecting the neon city lights at sunset, colorful yellow duck boats gliding across the water with the fountain spraying behind them, and panoramic elevated photos taken from the 3rd-floor terraces of Suseongmot Cafe Street.
Stay behind safety railings along the water's edge. Life jackets must be worn at all times while boarding duck pedal boats. Fishing and swimming in the lake are strictly prohibited, and pet owners must keep dogs on leashes and carry waste bags.
Lifebuoys and emergency call boxes are stationed around the perimeter. Suseong Police and municipal safety rangers patrol the lakeside park. Multilingual assistance is accessible via the Suseong Tourist Information Center and 1330.
The Suseong Artpia cultural performing arts center is 10 minutes walk east, while Apsan Park and its scenic cable car are 10 minutes west by taxi.
Q: Can you rent duck boats at night? A: Duck boats operate until sunset (usually around 18:30 to 19:00 depending on daylight and water safety conditions). Evening fountain viewing is best enjoyed from the wooden lakeside bleachers.
