Tucked into a high, pristine alpine bowl beneath the peaks of Mount Chilgapsan in Cheongyang, Alps Village earns its poetic nickname 'The Alps of South Chungcheong' from its dramatic sub-alpine microclimate. Surrounded by steep mountain ridges that block winter sunlight and trap freezing mountain winds, this small agrarian village ingeniously turned its bone-chilling winter cold into South Korea's most celebrated rural winter festival: the Chilgapsan Ice Fountain Festival (Eoreum Bunsu Chukje), launched in 2008.
Every December, local villagers spray clean mountain groundwater high into the sub-zero air, freezing it overnight into dozens of colossal, surreal natural ice pillars and glacier-like walls rising up to 15 meters tall. Master ice sculptors carve detailed ice castles, fairy-tale palaces, mythical dragons, and popular animated characters into the crystal-clear ice grottos. Surrounding the ice displays are thrilling winter adventure zones: 6 diverse snow sledding slopes, a curved ice bobsleigh run, horse-drawn sleigh rides, an overhead zip-line, and open charcoal braziers where visitors roast sweet chestnuts and sweet potatoes on long wire mesh pans.
Spring brings the greening of mountain orchards, blooming wild cherry trees, and hands-on strawberry harvesting workshops in the village greenhouses. Summer offers cool alpine breezes, refreshing splash pools, and trekking along the scenic lakeside trails of Mount Chilgapsan. Autumn showcases the Cheongyang Chili Pepper and Red Clay Gourd Festival, when thousands of spicy red chili peppers dry under the golden autumn sun. Winter is the uncontested peak season, when the village transforms into a dazzling, illuminated icy wonderland drawing hundreds of thousands of festive winter travelers.
The winter Ice Fountain Festival operates daily from late December through mid-February, open from 09:00 to 20:00 (nighttime illumination begins at 17:30). During spring, summer, and autumn, the village operates daily from 09:00 to 18:00 for eco-agricultural workshops. Arrive early at 09:30 on winter weekends to enjoy sledding with minimal wait times, or arrive at 16:00 to capture the ice sculptures during late afternoon daylight before experiencing the spectacular multi-colored LED night illuminations.
Winter festival admission is 9,000 KRW for general entry (ice fountains and sculpture viewing). Sledding passes granting unlimited rides on snow sleds, ice sleds, and bobsleigh runs are 20,000 KRW (Integrated Entry + Sled Pass: 29,000 KRW). The Roasted Chestnut and Sweet Potato experience costs 5,000 KRW per mesh pan. Free parking is available across several large village parking plazas.
From Seoul, board an express bus from Central City Terminal (Express Bus Terminal Station) directly to Cheongyang Intercity Bus Terminal (approx. 2 hours). From the terminal taxi rank, take a local taxi directly to Alps Village (approx. 15 minutes, fare approx. 15,000 KRW). Alternatively, take local rural buses bound for Jeongsan or Cheonjang-ri from the terminal.
The main central promenade weaving between the giant ice fountain towers and ice sculpture pavilions is flat and packed with decomposed granite, allowing manual wheelchairs and strollers to navigate through the core exhibition zone. However, the sledding slopes and higher hill areas feature natural snowy inclines that require assisted walking. Barrier-free restrooms and warming shelters are stationed near the main entrance.
Recommended 3-Hour Winter Fairytale Route: Arrive at Alps Village entrance → Walk through the breathtaking forest of 15m Colossal Ice Fountains and snap photos inside the Ice Castle → Race down the thrilling snow sledding slopes and curved ice bobsleigh track → Rent a wire roasting pan to roast sweet local chestnuts over glowing wood charcoal embers → Ride the overhead zip-line for bird's-eye views over the ice valley → Watch the ice sculptures light up in rainbow LED colors at dusk → Walk 5 minutes to cross the nearby Chilgapsan Cheonjangho Suspension Bridge.
Cheongyang is South Korea’s undisputed capital of spicy Cheongyang chili peppers (Gochu) and sweet Gugija (Goji berries / wolfberries). Savor Gugija Dwaeji Galbi (succulent pork ribs marinated in sweet goji berry broth), spicy Cheongyang Chili Hand-cut Noodles (Kalguksu), steaming bowls of warm Tofu Stew, and freshly roasted sweet chestnuts (Gunbam) piping-hot off the charcoal fires.
Vegetarian travelers will find comforting, hearty mountain options: steaming bowls of Tofu Stew (Dubu-jjigae), crispy Potato Pancakes (Gamjajeon), Acorn Jelly Salad (Dotorimuk), and sweet roasted chestnuts and roasted sweet potatoes cooked directly over wood fires. Local village cafes serve warming Goji berry herbal teas and sweet hot chocolate. Halal travelers will find fish stews, potato pancakes, and roasted chestnut snacks compliant.
Signature photo moments: standing directly beneath the towering 15-meter turquoise-tinted Ice Fountain monolith, candid portraits roasting chestnuts over open wood fires with golden sparks flying, action shots speeding down the ice bobsleigh course, and night photos standing inside the Ice Cave as vibrant multi-colored LED floodlights illuminate the translucent ice walls.
Dress warmly in windproof winter gear: thermal outerwear, warm waterproof gloves, winter boots with rubber grip, and a knit beanie are essential, as temperatures in this sheltered mountain bowl are consistently 3 to 5 degrees colder than surrounding towns. Do not climb or chip ice from the decorative ice fountains, as falling ice poses safety hazards. Supervise children closely near charcoal braziers.
Snow sledding tracks can be slick; follow all safety staff instructions at the top and bottom of each slope. In case of sudden unseasonably warm winter thaws or rain, certain outdoor sledding slopes may close temporarily for safety maintenance. For daily ice condition updates and festival inquiries, contact the Alps Village Office at 041-942-0797 or call 1330.
Located just 5 minutes away on foot is the Cheonjangho Suspension Bridge (207m), famed for its colossal 16-meter central tower sculpted in the shape of a giant red Cheongyang chili pepper and goji berry overlooking the lake.
