Spanning 402 meters across the tranquil expanse of Yedangho Lake, the Yesan Yedangho Suspension Bridge was inaugurated in April 2019 as the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in South Korea at the time of construction. Yedang Reservoir was originally constructed in 1964 with a water surface area of 9.9 square kilometers and a shoreline perimeter of 40 kilometers, serving as the agricultural lifeblood of the fertile Yesan and Dangjin plains. The bridge transformed this vast fishing lake into one of Korea’s most vibrant eco-tourism attractions.
The engineering showpiece is a soaring central pylon rising 64 meters tall, designed with a spiraling two-story open-air observation deck that gives visitors unobstructed 360-degree panoramic views of the water basin and surrounding forested hills. Suspended between twin steel cables, the pedestrian walkway features a central metal grating floor where visitors can watch water ripples underfoot while feeling a gentle rhythmic sway. At night, the bridge is illuminated by thousands of LED lights, accompanied by a world-class 96-meter floating Musical Fountain that shoots dancing geysers up to 110 meters into the sky synchronized with classical and contemporary music.
Spring brings cherry blossoms arching along the lake drive, blooming azaleas on the surrounding slopes, and crisp morning mists rising off the water. Summer draws families to evening light shows, refreshing water breezes, and lakeside glamping. Autumn paints the shoreline hills in rich amber and crimson foliage reflecting across the still lake waters during the Yesan Apple Festival in late October. Winter showcases a serene, frozen lake surface with thousands of migratory waterfowl resting on the ice while crisp winter sunsets turn the bridge pylon silhouette deep golden-orange.
The suspension bridge is open Tuesday through Sunday from 09:00 to 22:00 (closed on the first Monday of each month for regular safety inspections; if Monday is a holiday, closed on Tuesday). The Musical Fountain operates 4 times on weekdays (14:00, 17:00, 19:30, 20:30) and 5 times on weekends. The Yedangho Monorail operates daily from 09:00 to 20:00 (trains depart every 10 to 15 minutes). Arriving in late afternoon (17:30 to 20:30) allows you to experience daylight walking, sunset photography, and the illuminated evening musical fountain show.
Admission to the Yedangho Suspension Bridge, the central pylon observatory, and the floating musical fountain show is completely free of charge. The 5.4-kilometer scenic Monorail circuit (takes approx. 24 minutes) is 8,000 KRW for adults, 7,000 KRW for youth, and 6,000 KRW for children. Large public parking lots surrounding the tourist complex are completely free.
From Seoul Yongsan Station, take the Saemaeul or Mugunghwa train on the Janghang Line to Korail Yesan Station (approx. 1 hour 45 minutes). From the bus stop directly opposite Yesan Station, board local city bus 360, 361, or 364 directly to the 'Yedangho Chulleongdari' stop in approximately 20 minutes. Taxis from Yesan Station or Yesan Bus Terminal reach the bridge in 12 minutes for approximately 10,000 KRW.
Yesan Yedangho is an officially certified barrier-free 'Open Attraction' (Yeollin Gwangwangji). The bridge approach, the entire 402-meter suspension deck, and the 7-kilometer Slow Lake Boardwalk encircling the shore are paved with flat, step-free wooden decking and ramps with zero barriers for manual and electric wheelchairs and baby strollers. Note that reaching the upper observation platform on the central tower involves spiral stairs, but the main bridge walkway offers panoramic views without climbing. Wheelchairs are available for loan at the ticket office.
