Perched dramatically atop the rocky promontory known as Otbawi (Clothes Rock) along the Namhangang River, Danyang Mancheonha Skywalk is a masterpiece of contemporary experiential engineering. Opened in 2017, the facility derives its poetic name 'Mancheonha' (literally 'Ten Thousand Worlds Under Heaven') from its commanding vantage over the river bend and the folded limestone ridges of Sobaeksan National Park. It has quickly transformed Danyang from a sleepy rural basin into South Korea's capital of alpine adventure tourism.
The architectural anchor is a tilted spiraling cone tower rising 25 meters tall at an elevation of 120 meters directly above the swirling river rapids. Visitors ascend a gentle 360-degree sloped ramp wrapping around the steel skeleton to reach the crown. Jutting out horizontally into empty space are three cantilevered viewing fingers floored in triple-laminated transparent bulletproof glass, giving visitors the spine-tingling sensation of walking on air above the river basin and the Jungang Line railway bridges.
Spring brings lush greenery to the limestone cliffs and blooming azaleas along the river canyon. Summer delivers exhilarating alpine adventures, when cool river breezes temper the heat and water leisure craft streak through the gorge below. Autumn wraps the mountain slopes in a fiery kaleidoscope of crimson maples and golden ginkgo foliage mirroring the blue river waters. Winter displays stark snow-dusted limestone pinnacles and ice floes drifting down the Namhangang River beneath crystal-clear skies.
The skywalk operates Tuesday through Sunday from 09:00 to 18:00 in summer (ticketing closes at 17:00) and 09:00 to 17:00 in winter (ticketing closes at 16:00). It is closed on Mondays (except public holidays). Early morning (09:00 to 11:00) provides the clearest light across the Sobaeksan mountain range and the shortest queues for adventure rides, while late afternoon (15:30 to 17:00) treats observers to a glorious amber sunset spilling across the river valley.
Skywalk Observatory admission is 4,000 KRW for adults and 3,000 KRW for children/seniors, which includes complimentary round-trip shuttle bus transit from the riverside parking plazas to the mountain summit. Thrill rides are ticketed separately: 980-meter dual Zipwire is 30,000 KRW; 960-meter Alpine Coaster through forest trees is 15,000 KRW; and the curved 264-meter Mancheonha Slide is 13,000 KRW. Public parking across lots 1 through 6 is free.
From Seoul Cheongnyangni Station, board the KTX-Eum high-speed train to KTX Danyang Station (approx. 1 hour 15 minutes). From Exit 1 of Danyang Station, walk along the flat wooden boardwalk of Danyang Jando Trail hugging the vertical cliff for 20 minutes directly to Mancheonha Parking Lot 1. Alternatively, a taxi from Danyang Station takes less than 5 minutes and costs approximately 5,000 KRW.
The iconic circular observation tower is designed with universal accessibility: the continuous spiral ascent has zero steps, featuring a gentle incline of less than 8% that allows manual and electric wheelchairs and strollers to glide smoothly to the top glass decks. Shuttle buses connecting the ticket office to the tower include wheelchair-lift equipped vehicles upon request. Accessible restrooms are located at the ticketing pavilion and tower base.
Recommended 3-Hour Adventure Circuit: Arrive at Danyang Station → Walk the stunning 1.2km Danyang Jando Cliff Path over the river → Check in at Mancheonha Ticket Office 1 and board the shuttle bus to the summit → Ascend the gentle spiral ramp to the 120m Glass Skywalk Observatory → Brave the glass fingertips for photos over the abyss → Ride the thrilling 980m Zipwire or Alpine Coaster down to the valley base → Return along the river promenade to Danyang Town for garlic delicacies.
Danyang is South Korea’s undisputed capital of artisanal garlic cuisine, prized for the mineral-rich limestone soils of the region. Sample Danyang Maneul Tteokgalbi (succulent grilled beef and pork patties seasoned with roasted black garlic), whole-bulb Garlic Sundae (blood sausage stuffed with sweet fermented garlic), Garlic Chicken seasoned in sweet garlic glaze, and icy bowls of Makguksu (buckwheat noodles) garnished with garlic crisps.
Danyang Traditional Market (Gugyeong Market) and the riverside restaurants cater well to vegetarians with crispy garlic potato pancakes (Gamjajeon), organic acorn jelly salads (Dotorimuk-muchim), and fragrant Gondre (mountain thistle) bibimbap served with fresh herbs. Halal diners will find seafood-based haemul kalguksu, wild mountain greens, and fresh garlic tofu stews readily available throughout the district.
Must-have photo angles: standing at the apex of the center glass tongue looking straight down through your feet at the river 120 meters below, wide-angle shots framing the spiral lattice steel tower against the blue sky, capturing riders speeding along the high zipwire wires over the forested canyon, and sunset portraits on the western platform as golden light illuminates the Sobaeksan mountain horizon.
For safety, running, jumping, and leaning over railings on the glass observation decks is strictly prohibited. Shoe covers are provided and must be worn on the transparent glass to prevent scratching. Selfie sticks must be tethered with wrist straps to prevent dropping onto the canyon below. Pets are not permitted on the skywalk tower or on adventure rides.
High-altitude breezes can be strong on the exposed tower; secure loose hats and sunglasses. The adventure rides (Zipwire, Alpine Coaster, Slide) have weight limits (Zipwire: 35kg to 100kg; Alpine Coaster: max 100kg) and will suspend operations during severe rainfall, snow, or winds exceeding 10 m/s. For real-time weather and ride status, call the Mancheonha Operations Office at 043-421-0014 or dial 1330.
Connected directly to the base of the mountain is the 1.2-kilometer Danyang Jando Trail, an exhilarating wooden boardwalk bolted into the face of vertical limestone river cliffs. Within a 10-minute drive lie the subterranean wonderland of Gosu Cave and the iconic peaks of Dodamsambong.
Q: Can small children and elderly visitors visit the Skywalk? A: Yes, the spiral ramp has no stairs and is very gentle; visitors of all ages can comfortably walk or be pushed in a stroller/wheelchair. Q: Are ride tickets refundable if the weather changes? A: If ride operations are cancelled due to sudden thunderstorms or high winds, full refunds are promptly processed at the ticket counters.
