Deoksugung Palace

Deoksugung Palace originated as the private estate of Prince Wolsan, elder brother of Joseon's 9th monarch King Seongjong. Following the devastation of the 1592 Imjin War, King Seonjo returned to Hanyang and utilized the residence as a temporary royal palace (Jeongneung-dong Haenggung). It became the focal theater of Korea's modern history in 1897 when Emperor Gojong returned from the Russian legation, proclaimed the Korean Empire (Daehan Jeguk), and established Deoksugung as the imperial palace.

Deoksugung is celebrated for its rare synthesis of traditional Joseon wooden architecture and Western neoclassical stone edifices. Key structures include Junghwajeon Hall (Treasure), the majestic throne hall; Seokeodang, the palace's only two-story unpainted natural wood residence; Jeonggwanheon, an East-meets-West garden pavilion designed by Russian architect A.I. Sabatin where Emperor Gojong sipped coffee; and Seokjojeon (completed 1910), an imposing three-story neoclassical stone palace that houses the Daehan Empire History Museum.

Right along the Stone Wall Path, visitors can treat themselves to warm, freshly baked Belgian-style Liege waffles, rich chueo-tang (loach soup) at heritage restaurant 'Namdo Sikdang', cold soy milk noodles at the legendary 'Jinju Hoegwan' near City Hall, or historic European-style cafe fare along Jeongdong-gil.
