Essential K-Transit Guide: T-Money, Climate Card, KTX & Subways

South Korea possesses one of the world's most punctual, spotless, and integrated public transportation systems. In Seoul, Busan, Daegu, and across the regional high-speed rail network, a single rechargeable smart card handles seamless transfers between subways, metropolitan commuter buses, regional express lines, and licensed street taxis.

• T-Money Card (Nationwide Standard): Best for travelers venturing outside Seoul or taking intercity buses, KTX, and taxis. Costs 3,000 - 5,000 KRW to purchase (non-refundable card fee) and can be loaded with cash at any convenience store.
• Seoul Climate Card (기후동행카드): Best for intensive Seoul city explorers. Offers unlimited rides on Seoul subways and city buses for 1-day (5,000 KRW), 2-day (8,000 KRW), 3-day (10,000 KRW), 5-day (15,000 KRW), or 7-day (20,000 KRW) durations. Note: Airport Railroad express trains and Shinbundang Line are excluded.
• Mobile Transit Apps: While digital cards exist for Android via NFC, foreign-issued payment cards frequently fail app verification. Purchasing a physical card at airport convenience stores remains the most foolproof method.

1. Purchase Location: Any convenience store (CU, GS25, 7-Eleven, Emart24) at Incheon Airport (Terminal 1 & 2), Gimpo Airport, or inside metro stations.

2. Reloading Currency: MUST be reloaded in Korean Won (KRW) cash at convenience counters or multi-lingual automated ticketing machines inside metro stations. International credit cards are NOT accepted at station reload kiosks.

3. Recommended Initial Balance: 20,000 - 30,000 KRW for a typical 3-to-4 day itinerary.

• Tag In & Tag Out: Always tap your card when boarding AND when exiting every bus and subway turnstile. Failing to tap out results in a penalty maximum fare and invalidates transfer discounts.
• Transfer Window: Up to 4 consecutive transfers within 30 minutes between different bus routes or between subway and bus (extended to 60 minutes between 21:00 and 07:00).
• Same Bus Rule: Boarding the same bus route within 30 minutes does NOT qualify for a transfer discount.

• Designated Seating: Never sit in seats marked with pink stickers (pregnant women) or yellow signage (seniors and disabled passengers), even when subways are crowded.
• Beverage Restriction on Buses: Seoul city buses strictly ban passengers carrying open takeout cups of coffee, bubble tea, or unsealed food.
